Wake Muse: Shawna Olsten

For the next week we're focusing on the launch of our mists and roll-ons: a collection inspired by daily rituals. The collection consists of 5 blends: Wake, Focus, Balance, Still and Sleep. For this campaign, we spent 1 day getting a glimpse into the lives of 5 incredible, dynamic women from our community. Each woman is a muse for the blend she best represents. Here, you'll get a chance to learn more about her daily rituals.

We knew Shawna was the perfect muse for our Wake blend when she suggested shooting at her house at 7 am. We politely asked to reschedule (evidently there are morning people, and early morning people). When we did arrive at Shawna’s house, we were immediately greeted by her husband, Mike, and her two dogs: Josh and Lewis. We bopped around the house—capturing shots of her enviable top shelf, the rose crystal that hangs above the sliding door in her bedroom, and of our muse sipping coffee in her living room.

Shawna is a straight-shooter. You can tell she brings energy and drive to the table—the kind one needs to achieve the level of success she has. She has grown some of the most iconic brands in Vancouver (Native Shoes and Aritzia) and is a true powerhouse when it comes to the apparel/fashion industry. She’s also big into fitness—she used to be a spin instructor and now you can find her at Tight Club any day of the week. We also couldn’t help but notice that Shawna’s orange nails were indicative of her warm, get-up-and-go personality too.

We chatted with Shawna about her morning routine, the crystal she’s currently reaching for, and how her fur babies have changed her life. Side note: make sure to check out the family portrait in the photo gallery—Josh and Lewis look pretty cute on canvas.

You’re very much a morning person—we know because you tried to book the photo shoot at 7am 🙂 What is your morning routine like?

Most times. Meditate. Coffee. Toast. Work.
Other times. Sweat. Coffee. Toast. Work.

What’s your favourite way to sweat?

Anything Tight Club.

You and your husband are very design centric and have great style. You spoke about living in a neutral space and then introducing colour—what prompted the change to colour?

The rug in our living room that we got married on, anything went after that!

How were you first introduced to crystals? Which one feels most relevant in you life right now?

Probably as a kid going to the Crystal Arc on Granville Island and touching all the crazy rocks. Smokey Quartz, always stay grounded.

You have an incredible story of being an integral member of growing some of the most iconic brands in Vancouver. Where does your ambition come from/what drives you?

Defying the odds!

What advice would you give someone who is looking to start a career in fashion/apparel?

Make sure you really want it, be prepared to work hard and do whatever it takes to get your foot in the door. Be kind, firm and fair, you never know who will be your next boss.

Tell us about Josh and Luke—how have your fur babies changed your life?

Josh and Lewis 😉 Responsibility!!

How do you take time for yourself?

I’m a big fan of alone time everyday. No talking, no phone, just me, and maybe Josh and Lewis.
