Vitruvi Muse: Katie McBain

It’s no wonder Katie’s house is totally Pinterest-worthy—she and her husband, Stuart, designed and made most of the furniture in it. While they both work full time, they also run their lettering and design company, Milk + Honey on the side.  The shop is filled with gorgeous handmade goods, like prints, cards and wooden frames. Through her Instagram, Katie’s also shared some shots of floating shelves, an incredibly cool, minimalist desk, and a wooden dining room table—all designed and built by the two of them. We chatted with Katie about the inspiration behind Milk + Honey, her seriously adorable cats that act like dogs (best of both worlds), and some of her daily rituals.

What sparked you to start Milk + Honey with your husband?
My husband and I have always dreamed of doing big things together and set goals for ourselves. Making and building things on the weekends is what we always look forward to—it’s what really gets us through those tough days at work! Our friends and relatives told us we should start a business together and without hesitation we started with a business plan and got to work. We both have full-time jobs, so balancing life has been tricky but we have a blast together. It has been pretty amazing seeing the things we have hand crafted going up in peoples homes. It’s such a rewarding feeling!

Tea or coffee?
Coffee all the way. I drink it every morning and sometimes up to three times a day—terrible of me, I know! But I just can’t live without it. I really only enjoy tea when I’m not feeling well or when it gets colder outside.

You have 2 kitties! What’s a funny quirk you love about each of them?
Our kitties are inseparable and the cutest! I’m not just saying that because I’m their mom 😉 A few funny quirks we love about them is that they aren’t like any other cats I’ve met…they pretty much act like dogs. They love their bellies rubbed, the can sit on command, they come to you when you call their names, they greet us at the door every time we come home, and they love to play fetch. We love everything about our babies and couldn’t imagine our lives without them!

What are some of your daily rituals?
– Coffee
– Daily devotional
– Working out (at least 30-45 minutes a day—moving your body is so important)
– Making a juicer
– Essential oils

What’s the most-loved item in your closet?
Ripped black jeans and my super comfy gray sweater!

Which city has your heart?
Nashville! Some of the best memories of my life are held there and there are so many unique places to see and lots of things to do…not to mention the food is amazing down there! I’m so thankful for all the people I’ve met and it’s also where my hubby and I got married, so it will always be so special to me.

What space in your home is most special to you and why?
Our living room—my hubby and I spend most of our time there. We created it to be a comfortable space so we could entertain and we love everything about it!

Favourite essential oil?
Lavender helps me relax at night, or I’ll even put it on before work—I work with preschoolers so it literally is essential to me on some days!

How do you weave essential oil products into your day?
I diffuse them in the bathroom while I shower, in my kitchen/living room, or I apply some onto my skin.

Favourite quote?
Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healing to the body.
