Sunscreen used to be something that had a place and time. You’d bring it to the beach and apply it once you got settled. Your parents would slather it on your face before sending you off to summer camp. It was a specialty item you’d have to remember to pack. Now, it’s a daily essential. If you’re not wearing sunscreen everyday, it’s not hard to find someone telling you you should be. And yes, that’s kind of what we’re implying with all this, but we also realize it’s about finding the right products for everyday use. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite SPFs—most are geared towards daily use, while others could be supplemented with your daily SPF for when you need extra protection (aka that beach day or vacation). And of course, some are designed for the body and therefore should not be used on the face (gotta keep those pores clean). We hope that as you read this, you already have sunny plans on the horizon. Oh, and don’t forget to pack a hat.
Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35
Sadly we can’t get our hands on this in Canada, but after trying it through a friend, we can attest that it truly goes on clear like a serum, making it perfect to use every day (as Glossier has made clear). There’s no white cast and it really just feels like a step in your skincare routine. Plus it’s a great size for throwing it in your beach bag or carry-on.
Coola Cucumber Matte Face SPF 30 + Continuous Spray SPF 50
Coola is a fan favourite at the office. We love the cucumber matte face sunscreen because it’s designed for daily use as well—it’s quite light and absorbs easily into the skin. You really don’t get the feeling of clogged pores and the scent is cooling, natural and refreshing. For the body, we love the continuous spray method (makes application way easier) and SPF 50 is always a safe bet.
Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 30
Another one we’re deprived of in Canada, but this unseen sunscreen functions similar to Glossier’s Invisible Shield. It’s fragrance-free, oil-free and packed with antioxidants. Again, this would be a great option for a daily SPF—it’s meant to go on right before your moisturizer. It’s worth exploring the entire Supergoop line too—they have a Glow Stick that has majorly piqued our interest.
La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultra-Fluid Lotion SPF 60
In Canada we can buy this at our local drugstore, which makes it super easy to pick up before a trip to the beach or when you’re last-minute packing for a vacation. This one is definitely the most liquid-y of the bunch, but we like that it’s great for sensitive skin. It’s also fragrance-free which can be nice for a face sunscreen. We’d pack this especially for trips and reapply throughout the day (they say every 1-2 hours!) because it’s a higher SPF than most daily sunscreens.
Clarins Suscreen Cream High Protection SPF 30
This one made the cut purely based on smell. Designed for the body, it radiates this tropical, warm vacation vibe that we can’t get enough of.
Farmacy Green Screen SPF 30
A brand that focuses on clean beauty, Farmacy’s Green Screen SPF works double time as both a sunscreen and skincare product. It contains echinacea purpurea, which has the highest known concentration of antioxidants that help support an evenly-toned-looking complexion. This one goes over your moisturizer and can be used every. single. day.
Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer SPF 30
Drunk Elephant is also a brand that continues to impress at HQ. We’re already big fans of their serums, cleansers, and oils. This daily protection sunscreen goes on sheer and even has Marula oil in it to help moisturize the skin. They’ve reformulated it recently to make sure there’s no white cast or greasiness and it also makes the cut as a clean beauty brand.
