Keighty Gallagher is the original tight babe and the driving force behind Tight Club Athletics. Her entire jam is to help you bridge the gap between seeing the need to exercise and actually enjoying it, because you don’t have to be a jock to be tight! Founded on a mutual adoration for beers after work, Tight Club developed out of weekly exercise hangouts among a diverse group of bartenders, servers, painters, and clothing designers in East Van. These theme-based exercise sessions rapidly evolved into something much bigger: a non-gym based athletic club for folks who value active bodies, balanced lives, and the occasion zombie-themed training session. Because let’s face it, you’re never just training for the gym, you’re training for life. Keighty has a Bachelor of Science under her belt from Portland State University and her ACE Personal Training Certification, which means she can explain how plyometrics can change your life. But more than that, Keighty is a creative thinker who is constantly searching for clever ways to keep fitness friendly, fun, and sweaty for your enjoyment.
What are your morning rituals?
I’ve got my mornings down to a science: The first alarm hits the scene at 4:20am and I snooze ’till 4:28am in a strong sweaty embrace with my boyfriend. Shower, dress and coffee proceed and by the time I hit my desk it’s 5am and I’m writing out my class and client plans for the day. With my coffee cup in hand, I walk the 5 minute commute to my studio to open up and teach the first 6am class of the day. If I’m not up before the sun, I get pretty severe FOMO. It’s something I’m working on
What was the first thing you thought about this morning?
Big spoon or little spoon…that is the question.
Where do you get your inspiration? Any favourite blogs/magazines/books /websites?
A lot of my inspiration comes from community spaces that have nothing to do with fitness studios. The past year I’ve been engulfed in helping my interior designer create the my dream fitness studio, so I spent a lot of time in coffee shops, fashion boutiques, Nike retail stores and other gathering spots. I’m fascinated with creating spaces that naturally allude to sustaining human connection. So far so good
What can you not live without?
My morning shower. It’s the best way to wake up, or take standing naps.
Do you have a favorite quote?
Don’t go changing (said every day by old Track Coach) and more recently, “You’ll stop giving discounts when you realize how much you’re worth” – found on Instagram.
If you were an essential oil, what scent would you be?
Whatever clean skin smells like after a hot shower.
What made you start Tight Club?
I wanted to change the way people see and interact with fitness. I wanted to introduce movement, be it rigorous or not, to creative people’s lives and have my classes connect on a way more personal level than what any gym could create.
Who are you currently Instagram stalking?
Currently, always and forever I follow this freak @lauraclery who’s this funny babe and her serious boyfriend making weird videos. She kind of reminds me of Henry and my relationship.
What are you most excited about right now?
I’m most excited about being a better leader. It’s the class I failed in university, and want to prove to myself and my team and I’m here to elevate them as trainers and leaders. It’s been a serious work in progress and I’m love/hating every moment of it.
How do you stay healthy?
I workout in the mornings, I drink my coffee black, and add spinach to my Almost Chocolate smoothies.
