The spaces that you inhabit throughout your day have such a profound influence on your state of mind. Whether you’re fully aware of it or not, even little things like having a dirty stove or forgetting to make your bed can build up negative energy around you. This stagnant energy can have a huge impact on your mind and mood—it takes up mental space and can block and disrupt your creative flow. Scent also plays a huge role in how you perceive your surroundings, and certain aromas have properties that can help ground you or perk you up naturally (hello citrus oils for summer).
Since we’re officially halfway through the year (let’s take a minute to process this…) it’s actually a great time to reset the energy in your space. You can also give this a try after something negative goes down in your space: an argument, someone moves out, or you were home sick in bed. Your space should be a refuge—somewhere you can let out a big sigh of relief and feel your most comfortable. While cleaning up clutter is step 1, there are other rituals you can practice that help promote good vibes. Summertime calls for lightness, and we couldn’t think of a better way to float into these next few months than by filling our space with positive energy.
Let the fresh air roll in
The first, most simple thing you can do to remove negative energy is to open your windows. If anything is built up and stuck inside, give it a chance to escape. Circulating fresh air will also help you clear your lungs and take deeper breaths, which in turn increases your energy and vitality. If your space is east-facing, open your windows and let the sunlight naturally pour in as well.
Clean your entrances
Not so fun fact: negative energy enters your home the same way you do. Cleaning your doorknobs, windows, and patio doors is a simple way to make sure no negative energy is hanging around. We like making a gentle homemade cleaner that combines 20 drops of Lemon essential oil, 10 drops Tea Tree essential oil, 1 cup water, and 1/4 cup white vinegar in a spray bottle. Give these points of entry a solid wipe down and naturally disinfect them while you’re at it.
Burn palo santo
Palo santo is also known as “Holy Wood”, and has proved itself relevant in both ancient and modern day rituals. The burning of palo santo wood is used for purification and protection, which is why it’s used to cleanse spaces. We prefer this scent over sage and love the ritual of waving it around—it’s very freeing. Make sure to wave it in closets and any other cluttered spaces to really get rid of any bad ju ju.
Diffuse bright, uplifting scents
It’s a no brainer that scent affects your mood. Citrus oils are known to promote positive energy and lift your spirits. Whenever we’re in need of an energy overhaul and want something super fresh and clean-smelling, we diffuse Peppermint and Sweet Orange. It instantly leaves us feeling more awake and smells like you cleaned the whole house. If you’re looking for something to diffuse before bed, we suggest Lavender and Frankincense, to help calm the senses and leave you feeling grounded.
A lot of negative energy can accumulate in the corners of your space. Salt has been used for centuries to cleanse and absorb negative energy, and there are a few ways you can go about using it. First, you can place salt in little bowls around your space. If you like the idea of going a bit deeper, then you can sprinkle salt on the floor, leave it for a day or 2, then vacuum it up. Lastly, if you want a more long-term solution for creating good vibes, you can purchase a Himalayan salt lamp.
So there you have it—5 super simple ways to cleanse the energy of your space (without spending too much $$ either). Do it now and think of it as a fresh start to your summer.
